About Alex

  • Alex was born & raised in Seattle, Washington, singing and playing piano from the age of 7. She’s the daughter of a professional dueling piano player and a CPA, and the perfect balance of creative, quirky, and organized. Music was the only option.

Her career has been highlighted by her releasing her first album, Lemon Tree, in May 2022, and her experience performing as a guest artist at the Kobe Jazz Festival in 2018, accomplished by her winning the adult division of the Seattle-Kobe Sister City Association Jazz Competition at Jazz Alley. One of her personal favorite experiences is returning to perform holiday music at the West Seattle Thriftway grocery store every year.

  • In 2020, she joined the up-and-coming record label, Next Music Company, run by the credited Jeff Baker, and recorded her debut album to release in May 2022, with incredible musicians Darrell Grant, Clark Sommers, Mark Ferber, Lucas Winter, and Thomas Marriott. The album features her original music, two of her original vocalese, two of her grandmother’s original songs from the 1950s, as well as other surprises.

Alex’s heart comes out in her lyrics: she loves writing vocalese, continuing the tradition of reinvigorating jazz throughout history. She tells her own stories and stories of others’. Her grandmother, Peggi Griffith, was a singer in the 1950s-1960s, but was unable to continue her budding career because of an unsuccessful vocal nodule surgery. Alex considers it her duty to sing for herself and for her grandmother.

  • Alex spent three years in the Onions, one of Seattle’s finest high school vocal jazz groups, and grew up singing and playing saxophone, piano, and guitar. She graduated with honors from the University of Northern Colorado 2020 with a B.M. in Jazz Studies, with a certificate in Music Technology and a minor in French. She was a member of two Downbeat-winning vocal jazz groups, NoCoVo and Vocal Lab in the esteemed jazz program at UNCo. She now lives in Seattle with her boyfriend and two cats, teaching voice/music lessons, performing solo and duo gigs, gigging with Nearly Dan, the local Steely Dan cover band, and with the Blue Wave Wedding Band.
